Something New: Christmas Edition

Hopefully you have checked out the Starbucks indie-Christmas album, Holidays Rule.

My favorites are "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" from The Head and the Heart.

and "I Heard the Bells" from the now-defunct Civil Wars. Like always, their harmonies are impeccable. I'm heartbroken that they are no longer together.

But my absolute favorite indie Christmas song released this year is a cover of The Pogue's "Fairytale of New York" by YEARS. It's a little less raw than the original but I love this duet. I love how the piano, the drums, and the guitar build throughout the first verse into the Irish sounding chorus.

New(ish) Albums I Love

Starting the new school year has given me a reason to procrastinate and put some music up on here!

A few album recommendations:

"Night Visions" from Imagine Dragons. I love this Las Vegas band. I love their instrumentation and variety of sound. Many of their songs have a very epic feel.

I talked about "Demons" earlier but here are two other recommendations:

"Tiptoe"

"It's Time"

"Walk the Moon" from Walk the Moon. I previously rec'd "Tightrope" off their "Anna Sun" EP, but their full length album is fun indie rock as well.

"Next in Line"

"Anna Sun"

"Sound the Drum" from The Mowgli's. I love their upbeat sound.

"Hey There Hi Hello"

Today: Something New

I love the vocals of Julie Baenziger. They give songs from Sea of Bees such a vulnerable, interesting quality.

I absolutely love the harmonies on "Broke" from her new album, "Orangefarben." Especially the little lifts at the end of some of her notes. Sometimes it's not about singing perfectly.

Friday, June 29, 2012

Today: Something New

I'm enjoying the new album from The Mynabirds, "Generals."

I love all the different rhythms and drum beats of "Body of Work." It is such an interesting sound. The vocals add another drumming rhythm to the song. So cool!

Today: Something New

Fang Island is a little more party-rock than the mellow stuff I usually include in playlists. But "Asunder" off their upcoming record, "Major," out in July, is one song I really want to blast in my car while I'm driving around this summer.

I like that the backing track is a constant fun, head-banging lite beat while the vocals work smoothly over the top. The low-key break at the 2:30 mark allows the momentum to build again.

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Today: Something New

I've always liked Jukebox the Ghost for their quirky songs. Their new record, "Safe Travels," is a mixed bag of sounds.

I really like the rock vibe of "At Last." It is kind of different than my other favorite songs of theirs. It tells a story. Also check out upbeat song, "Ghosts In Empty Houses."

Today: Something New

Emeli Sande has been blowing up in Britain and Europe for the past six months or so. And with her album, "Our Version of Events," released in the States last week, it won't be long until she's widely known here as well. One of my friends just asked me about her so that is a good sign she is on her way.

I like her ballads more than her more hip-hop influenced tracks. My favorite is "River." Her voice is incredibly clear and powerful.

Monday, June 25, 2012

Today: Something New

I have a good friend who is a big Spinto Band fan. Their new album, "Shy Pursuit," has some songs that would make good additions to summer playlists.

My favorite track on the record is "Muesli." They've been playing it live for a couple years, so it's about time we got a studio recording. I love guitar riff after chorus.

Friday, June 22, 2012

Today: Something New

Something new for Friday. I love Mika though he is a very different kind of artist than I usually post about. This is pure pop.

I loved Mika's first album. His sophomore attempt wasn't quite the same level of pop magic. But I really like his new single, "Celebrate" ft. Pharrell. It is actually very low-key for him, but great for summer.

Thursday, June 14, 2012

Today: Something New

I've posted about Ed Sheeran before. He's one of my favorite artists right now. His new album "+" was released in the USA this week.

This song is free on itunes this week and was previously released on an EP last year, which means there is a chance that this will be his first venture into real mainstream popularity (he's already had success in Britain). But for good reason. "The A Team" is incredibly catchy and the melody is so simple and soft-spoken, but I love alternating chord jumps. I also really love that you can still hear his accent.

I think this song is beautiful. The guitar and the piano alternate with the melody. And his voice is beautiful singing about "Autumn Leaves." I love how the song just floats away at the end.

My other favorites are "Lego House" and "Sunburn." Also check out "U.N.I." and "Gold Rush" for his faster songs; it's almost like he's rap-singing.

Today: Something New

This song is a little strange, but I like it. I always like when whistling adds a little something - as long as you don't get carried away like Andrew Bird. Here Suckers mixes it up with some falsetto and hints of electronic pop.

Though there a melancholy vibe, like the lyrics say, it's not "Chinese Braille," so it can't be that bad. I definitely want to check out the rest of their album, "Candy Salad."

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Today: Something New

The newest record from The Tallest Man On Earth, "There's No Leaving Now," was released today. Kristian Matsson is like a Swedish Bob Dylan. I love what he does with the guitar in his songs.

I love the train-like rhythm of "Revelation Blues." The guitar part is stellar. I can see the simple vocal melody is just riding the guitar train across a prairie or something. The best line: "Sometimes it's just roses dying too young."

I absolutely love the chorus of "Criminals." The melody of "this Napoleon ride" is wonderful. I love the plucky guitar as well.

Monday, June 11, 2012

Today: Something New

Not only is their name band awesome, Trampled by Turtles, but their sound is also great.

I love the strings on "Arrow" from the album "Stars and Satellites." A bit folky but very indie and perfect for a mellow summer night. This is just a beautiful song.

Friday, June 8, 2012

Today: Something Borrowed

Sometimes covers make more of an impact than the original version. Ra Ra Riot has a new cover of Steve Winwood's "Valerie."

In 2004, Eric Prydz released "Call On Me," a house cover that will always remind me of dance parties in college. This cover is a nice middle ground of the two. Very 70s influenced but you can tell they are having fun with the sound.

Thursday, June 7, 2012

Today: Something New

I love me some Icelandic indie folk rock. With "My Head Is an Animal," Of Monsters and Men have their first full length record. And it is wonderful. I can listen to the whole thing over and over.

My favorite right now is "King and Lionheart." I love the harmonies. Nanna and Ragnar sound so great together. I also love all the guitar parts weaving together.

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Today: Something New

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros are somewhat hit or miss for me. I loved their debut song, "Home," but some of their other songs I just don't get. Their new album, "Here," continues in that vein for me.

This song, "Dear Believer," sounds a lot like The Beatles to me. In the feel and the simple verses. Like something George Harrison would put out if he were making music today. The chorus has a more choral feel, which makes sense since the band is ten members strong. I love this band best when they utilize their horns and accordion. And don't go too out there.

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Today: Something New

Continuing in my songs for summer playlist is "Moving to Neptune" from Cruiser. I love the summery beach feel of this song.

The guitar riff is great throughout this song and the vocals are super mellow but catchy. I love the different sounds of the verses and the chorus. Check out their self-titled EP.

Monday, June 4, 2012

Today: Something New

My love for Keane has been long standing. There new album, "Strangeland," shows how they have evolved from their earlier projects. I always love the piano in Keane's song, and the piano in the chorus of "Disconnected" compliments the vocals nice. There are really good harmonies there.

Friday, June 1, 2012

Today: Something New

The ever-magical Regina Spektor released a new album this week, "What We Saw From the Cheap Seats."

I am so jealous of her range. Her jumps are crazy! And the way she uses her voice as an instrument. I think the most striking quality of her songs is what she chooses to repeat. Emphasizing something different with each repetition. My only complaint about "Small Town Moon" is that it is so short.

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Today: Something New

Time for a more upbeat song today. King Charles is so strange that I always find their songs so interesting. "Loveblood" is so fun.

The song is as quirky as the title character, "Lady Percy," apparently is. I also love the juxtaposition of the verses and the chorus. And the very Caribbean beachy feel.

Today: Something Told

I am a big fan of musicals. Probably because I grew up watching all kinds with my mother, sisters, and grandmother. So when the teaser trailer for the movie version of Les Miserables was released today, many friends (and my mom of course) sent me a link, asking what I thought.

When I started this blog, I wrote about my feelings regarding this movie, as casting was underway. Since then, I have just been mostly grateful that Samantha Barks was cast as Eponine since she played the role at the West End. I have more thoughts but first, the trailer:

It is short. Someone not familiar with the plot would only learn that Anne Hathaway's character cuts her hair very short while passably singing about lost dreams. I knew from the beginning that Anne would not be able to sing "I Dreamed a Dream" like a Broadway actress would. Movie Fantine will be very different than stage Fantine. She does not have the power or the breath control to really showcase the anger and frustration needed in this song. Fantine is dying. She is lamenting how life has lead her to nothing, selling herself to send money to a daughter brought on by a teenage transgression and dying from tuberculosis. It is sad, yes, but she is mostly heart-broken and angry. From what I heard in the trailer, this does not come across. The pinnacle of the song is the break and crescendo to "So different from this hell I'm living." Hathaway's performance is much shakier, as if she's crying, than it is usually sung. Maybe there will be a studio version recorded for the soundtrack or something. But really, it's a movie. She has the chance to sing it as many times as she wants to get it perfect. There really is no excuse.

The cinematography of the one minute and thirty-eight seconds is beautiful. If nothing else, the movie will be beautiful to watch. I find Hugh Jackman's monk look, as escaped prisoner, Jean Val Jean, with the beard and shaved head, quite disconcerting. Russell Crowe looks more like Russell Crowe than Inspector Javert, but the costumes look good. We get a quick glimpse of Amanda Seyfried's Cosette, looking suitably boring, and Eddie Redmayne's Marius on the barricade.

There is no dialogue, so we have still not addressed my concerns about whether the movie will be an operetta like the stage production, but I would guess not. That will be an interesting change. Hopefully we will get a full length trailer soon.

Today: Something New

After quite a few days of heavy rain, the mood has been a bit melancholy here. "I Can't Keep You In My Mind" from La Sera fits that mood well.

I think La Sera has really found a good balance with this record, "Sees the Light."

Friday, May 25, 2012

Today: Something New

BOY is, ironically, a female German pop duo. They have a happy, infectious sound and just released their record, "Mutual Friends."

I think this song, "Little Numbers," has become popular to use on television soundtracks this spring. It is definitely fun enough and I'm looking forward to hearing more from BOY.

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Today: Something New

This is another fun song from Dinosaur Feathers. I'm going to be playing this album, "Whistle Tips," all summer.

I think the upbeat, electronic sound makes up for the fact that the vocals aren't amazing. "Young Bucks" is a good song, simple and fun.

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Today: Something New

Reptar is a band that has taken me a while to decide if I like or not. I've finally decided that I like some of their stuff, but others I just don't get. Sometimes the instrumentation is just too weird for me. And that is totally okay.

I have a feeling that "Sebastian" off "Body Faucet" is a song I would like to see them perform live. I really like the chorus of "Ohs."

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Today: Something New

This is a new song from The Tallest Man On Earth. I'm super excited for his new album, "There's No Leaving Now," out in a couple weeks.

I love his whole sound. "1904" definitely puts his old school vibe to good use. So great.

Friday, May 18, 2012

Today: Something New

If you are ready for summer like I am, you probably love beachy, SoCal rockers, Best Coast.

The lead-off single, "The Only Place," is also the title track off the new album, out this week. So beachy and fun and upbeat.

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Today: Something New

I think I might like the second record from Dinosaur Feathers, "Whistle Tips," even more than their first.

I absolutely love the vibe and funky chorus on "Beatcha." I am so ready for summer and this is perfect. This is definitely going on my July 4th playlist.

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Today: Something New

One of my best friends just had the chance to see Beach House live. I have to say I'm very jealous.

And in honor of their new album, "Bloom," out this week, enjoy a live version of "Wild." The vocals are awesome. I apologize for the strobe-lighty video.

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Today: Something New

I'm back! I've reaffirmed my love of Ed Sheeran. "Give Me Love" is off his "The A List" EP from last fall but will also be on his new record, "+" which will be out in June.

I love the break down around 3:30 to the end of the song. He is a fabulous musician.

Today: Something Told

My third Coachella post. Hopefully I will be able to post FROM Coachella at some point in the future.

Youtube stream: http://www.youtube.com/user/coachella/live

Bands to check out on Sunday:

Real Estate is beachy rock with great harmonies and great guitar.

At this point everyone knows Gotye. He is definitely the set to watch at this year's festival.

Florence + the Machine never disappoint. Her voice is just so haunting and beautiful live.

Today: Something Told

Coachella is two weekends this year due to it's crazy popularity.

Again the youtube livestream for next weekend is: http://www.youtube.com/user/coachella/live

Bands to check out on Saturday:

AWOLNATION just released a bunch of remixes of their song, "Sail," from their 2011 record, "Megalithic Symphony." I also really like "Guilty Filthy Soul." I hope they release a new full length album soon.

St. Vincent is strong, sometimes dark, sometimes floaty, rock led by female vocals. "Cruel" is a great example from "Strange Mercy."

The Head and the Heart has been a staple at Coachella the past couple years. They are a great indie folk band. I love the instrumentation and harmonies on "Honey Come Home." Another band I hope comes out with a new album soon.

Monday, April 16, 2012

Today: Something New

I love the horns and chimes in this song. There is so much going on.

I really like Dana Valatka's vocals and harmonies as well. "Get Alive" from AU's new record, "Both Lights."

Friday, April 13, 2012

Today: Something Told

Coachella is this weekend and next. Coachella is my favorite music festival, basically because it is a hipster's music dream. There are so many acts I would love to see if I could physically get to Southern California this weekend or next. But, you can check out the youtube livestream here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/coachella/live

Bands to check out on Friday:

Givers have made a splash with their single "Up, Up, Up" but it's not even their best song. Check out "Meantime" from their album, "In Light."

I've mentioned Grouplove in a previous post. They are awesome. "Slow" is one of my favorite songs from "Never Trust A Happy Song."

The Black Keys are a seminal hipster band. They are also great live. I really love "Little Black Submarines" off their recent album, "El Camino."

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Today: Something New

"Ten Years Old" from You Won't's "Skeptic Goodbye" is short, extremely simple song.

I love the piano and the nostalgic vocals. It is like an old memory being played back for you. I love all the different instruments used to back the simple, rough vocals.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Today: Something New

Ok, let's be real. Sufjan Stevens can be weird when he wants to. Genius sometimes, but weird. On his latest collaboration with Rosie Thomas, they utilize auto-tune and electronic games to create a magical candy land of a song. Perhaps a bit long (it may have been better to cut out the middle 2 minutes), but I find this song really interesting to listen to. And I love the lyrics: "I'm high as a rooftop now."

I hear "Where Were You" as a less haunting. updated Imogen Heap. This song will be on a record out later this month.

Monday, April 9, 2012

Today: Something Old

This song is a great indie find from about three and a half years ago. They haven't really done much since, but I love this song.

Towards the end of their record, "Broadcast," Meese has a wonderful piano driven ballad with "Movie Screens." The vocals of Patrick Meese are very similar to The Fray or OneRepublic. I dare you to not get the chorus stuck in your head.

Today: Something New

Walk the Moon is a little more intense than I usually go for. The guitar is very rock. The synthesizer adds a really cool layer to their sound.

You will definitely sing along with the Ohs of "Tightrope." The whole "Anna Sun EP" is fun indie rock.

Friday, April 6, 2012

Today: Something New

I love this song. It is just so happy. The guitar; the melody; the drums. It's a celebration.

Little Comet's EP, "Worry," is pure British indie rock. "Waiting In The Shadows In The Dead Of Night" is so catchy, you will be singing it all day.

Today: Something New

The Vanderbuilts are wordsmiths, if you couldn't tell by their name. I love the violin and the poetic lyrics in "I'm Coming Home."

The old school folk music vibe of the record, "Miguel's Orchard," blends so well with the throw-back lyrics; like a soldier after the Civil War.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Today: Something New

Usually I try to find a video. But this song was just so good that I couldn't wait for a youtube video to pop up. So please go here to listen to "Guts" by Alex Winston.

http://www.yinmagazine.com/2012/03/mp3-alex-winston-guts/

This song is great. It has such a cool energy right from the chimes at the beginning. Her child-like voice is haunting and capable of a lot of power. I love the almost Asian influence of the background instrumentation.

Today: Something New

I love the dissonance created between all the voices on this track. I love the female voice over all the rough male voices. And the organ at the end is superb. Sorry no video but you can check out "Hazy Lions" from Peter and the Wolf's record, "Easy Mountain," on bandcamp!

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

Today: Something New

I wasn't sure I like La Sera when their first record came out last year. But I'm reconsidering after hearing their new album, "Sees the Light."

Katy Goodman's second solo-record is very beachy and summery. Her vocals stand out more than her first venture. I really the rock guitar riff on "Please Be My Third Eye."

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

Today: Something New

The new record from Of Monsters and Men is out today and because I can't get enough of female-led indie rock ensembles, they are right up my alley.

Here is a live performance of "Mountain Sound" (the song begins at 1:20) which does a good job of showing off their harmonies and Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir's crystal clear voice. I definitely would like to see them live.

Today: Something New

I know last time I posted about King Charles, I said how weird he was. He and his music videos are still weird.

The album, "LoveBlood," comes out next month and Mississippi Isabel is another fun, quirky song. Can you tell I'm ready for happy summer music?

Monday, April 2, 2012

Today: Something New

New Kishi Bashi. I really just want to be one of the extra voices on one of his songs.

He makes interesting music out of random sounds. "It All Began With a Burst" is cacophonous and a slow build. There is so much going on, I recommend a few listens.

Today: Something Old

The Rolling Stones are one of my all-time favorite bands. And "Paint It Black" is my favorite song of theirs.

A 1966 release off "Aftermath," it is such a weird song, but pure rock and roll. I absolutely love the sitar guitar rift and the interesting drum beat. And of course, Mick Jagger is just such a badass. Wonderful.

Friday, March 30, 2012

Today: Something New

My favorite part of this song is the choral ahhs throughout. They make "One Day Soon" very special.

The vocals from Glass Pear on their self-titled album sound so delicate. I love it. The song is so simple but really creates a wonderful little world to live in for about three minutes.

Today: Something New

Imogen Heap is so weird. But she is fabulous. I've never heard a pop song that uses Chinese.

Off her upcoming album, "Xizi She Knows" stays pretty true to her sound. I get flashes to a Grey's Anatomy soundtrack with her vocals, but I really like the background track.

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Today: Something New

Another mellow song for today. I love the vibe Beach House has, and I can't wait for their new record, "Bloom."

Their lead-off single, "Myth," is strong. I love how the vocals layer over the piano, which in turn layers over the drums. And the guitar mirroring the melody during the last minute is beautiful. This song feels like a countdown.

Today: Something New

Starting a song with clapping is always going to make me want to listen. I can't decide if I like the melody and the vocals or the fun keyboard in the background more.

Eli Murdock has such a cool, sleepy song with his single, "Everything Happens For the First Time." I love how he sounds when he opens up on the title line of the chorus.

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Today: Something New

I loved Best Coast's album, "Crazy For You," so I'm so happy they have released a new single.

Best Coast is the kind of quintessential summery pop-rock that I love. It has such a California vibe. "The Only Place" does not disappoint. I love the guitar and Bethany Cosentino's vocals.

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Today: Something New

Is it summer yet?

This is old school and very refreshingly new. I love it. "Better Off Without You" from Summer Camp's record, "Welcome to Condale" is so fun.

I don't know why this kind of music makes me so happy, but I like almost anything that I can dance to, including "Down."

Monday, March 26, 2012

Today: Something Old

I'm not really the biggest Bob Dylan fan. I think he's an amazing song-writer, but I don't have the same affinity towards him like I do many of his generation. That being said, I really love this song.

I couldn't find a video of the original version "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," so if you haven't heard it, PLEASE try to listen to that. Instead here is a recent live version that is very different, but it has an added bonus of Eric Clapton. Two amazing guitarists for the price of one! The reason I love the original is how simple and contemplative it is. This video lacks that, but if you listen to the lyrics you may be able to tell what I mean.

Today: Something New

This is kind of a different sound than I'm usually into. A new band, Imagine Dragons, reminds me a lot of The Script or OneRepublic. I really like the big sound they have.

The epic sound of "Demons" off their EP, "Continued Silence," is really beautiful. I love the contrast between the verses and the choruses.

Friday, March 23, 2012

Today: Something New

The Chevin is a British band who has released a self-titled EP in the UK. It is not available in the US yet but they just played at SXSW, so hopefully it will be soon. I really like their alt-rock vibe.

You can hear influences of U2 and Coldplay in the long sustained notes of "Champion" but it doesn't quite have the same epic feel of many of U2's standards. I do really love the way the song fades out at the end though.

Today: Something New

Matt Corby was on Australian Idol. I wish American Idol would find talent like this. I really love his voice, especially when he has lets it get growlly.

"Brothers" from his record, "Into the Flame," showcases Corby's wide vocal range and I love piano and drums together during the chorus. I'm really loving Australian artists recently.

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Today: Something New

I'm really loving the vibe of the new record, "A Sleep & a Forgetting," from Islands. They remind me of The Black Keys, especially the gravelly voice of Nick Thorburn.

"Can't Feel My Face" is both fun and fast but with dark undertones. I absolutely love the guitar. It's almost like demented beach music. Love it.

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Today: Something New

Here is a song that is a little more electronic than I usually like. But since the weather has turned, I've been enjoying really upbeat, almost-dancy music.

The band, Tanlines, has a really catchy melody here with, "All of Me" off their record, "Mixed Emotions." I'm definitely going to give the rest of the album a listen.

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Today: Something New

Amber Papini from the band, Hospitality, has a really interesting unique voice. Their self-titled album has been a fun upbeat one for winter.

"All Day Today" is really fun and happy. I love the horns and the different percussion sounds and the semi-electronic sounds all combined for a sunny pop song.

Today: Something New

The soundtrack for The Hunger Games is definitely taking the indie route. The second single released was "Abraham's Daughter" from The Arcade Fire. They have built up a lot of cred since their Grammy win last year and this song is really cool.

It's creepy in a really ominous and foreboding way. But I like it. There is a lot of sound especially at the 2:40 mark that seems to be building to something and then it just ends. Perfect.

Monday, March 19, 2012

Today: Something New

I really liked Yellow Ostrich's first record, "The Mistress," that was out last August. So I was pleasantly surprised when they released a new album at the beginning of this month, "Strange Land.

"

Yellow Ostrich continues with their off-kilter alt-rock tracks with "Marathon Runner," their lead-off single. The beginning of the song is interesting but I really love when this song hits the chorus around 1:40. Quite possibly a good song to run to.

Today: Something Old

Even though this Old Crow Medicine Show song came out in 2004, it will always remind me of college. While most of the student body prided itself on NOT being southern, pretty much everybody was able to sing along any time "Wagon Wheel" was played.

Maybe it's that hipsters like to think of themselves as ironically trashy or that the strings and harmonies are exceptional. It's really just a good song.

Friday, March 16, 2012

Today: Something New

Since I previously posted a cover from Memoryhouse, I thought I'd include an original song, "Walk With Me," off "The Slideshow Effect." Again, I love the female vocals of Denise Nouvion. Supposedly, this genre is dream pop, which is fitting.

I really like this fun, summery, dreamy sound of "dream pop." Wonderful.

Today: Something Told

SXSW post. This week I've posted some songs by bands performing at South By Southwest this week. Over the past few years, Austin has become a major hotspot for art and culture. The Austin music scene is best showcased by the annual SXSW Music and Film Festival. Over six days, over 2,000 bands perform at various venues around the city. What makes SXSW special is that it doesn't limit itself to one or two genres of music. There is such a wide variety, highlighted by this year's big names: Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen, and Fiona Apple. There is hip-hop, rock, pop, metal, country, and all sorts of variations and blends of everything in between. Anyone who likes music can find something they will fall in love with. Other favorites include Neon Trees, Sleigh Bells, Ed Sheeran, Of Monsters and Men, The Mynabirds, Chairlift, and The Drums. As much as I would love to attend SXSW, that was not a possibility this year, so like most people, we will have to make do with reviews and youtube videos of varying quality. Oh the wonders of the internet... Some cool youtube finds:

Bruce Springsteen on March 15, the sound quality is good on his new song "Wrecking Ball," even though there are some annoying people talking toward the end.

Dead Sara performing an acoustic set. I'm not really familiar with this band, but I'm really impressed with this girl's voice and I like the song, "Weatherman."

Fiona Apple singing a new song, "Anything We Want." The sound is kind of quiet but I couldn't find a better version. I love when she plays the triangle thing at the end.

fun. performing their hit, "We Are Young." This is very stripped down version of the song. It even includes that awesome staple of all live performances: extremely off-key crowd singing interludes.

Jay-Z headlines the first night of the festival performing, "99 Problems." This will probably be one of the only rap songs I ever post here.

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Today: Something New

Another SXSW rec! "Stay With Me" by No off of "Don't Worry, You'll Be Here Forever."

I absolutely love when this song hits the chorus. Its haunting and driving and rock. After the more upbeat lead up, the simple vocals and kick drum have such a cool effect. This is one I would definitely want to see live.

Today: Something New

Here is more from Good Old War. The record, "Come Back As Rain," blends a lot of sounds from folk-country and sunny indie-rock.

"Better Weather" is more on the country end of their sound, which is probably attributable to the banjo. It reminds me a bit of Zac Brown Band, but with an indie twist. I really love the harmonies and the instrumental break around 1:30 (which definitely adds to the country sound). The lyrics are also really cute and positive.

"Over and Over" is a lot more upbeat than most of the record. This song starts off so strong. I love the guitar and the rhythm section. It sounds almost like a blend of Mexican and Caribbean sounds. I really like it.

Today: Something New

Continuing with awesome SXSW bands, here is something new from Dry the River. I love, love, love the harmonies on the title track of their new "Weights and Measures" EP. The beginning of the song is simple and haunting until the full sound kicks in.

If you ignore the creepy eyes in the video on focus on Pete Liddle's beautiful voice, you'll really enjoy this. I love how his voice soars during the chorus. I really love the violin here too.

Today: Something Borrowed

I am huge Fleetwood Mac fan and I love the Rumours album completely. The sound and songs of Fleetwood Mac are so iconic that it is really hard to find a good cover. But I really like this cover of "Go Your Own Way" by Lissie.

She really adds something new and different to Lindsey Buckingham's song, especially what she does with the melody in the second verse. But she also stays true to the sound of the original, which I really like.

Today: Something New

This song, also on All Songs Considered, could not be more different than the previous post. The best word to describe this sound is lively.

I love all the horns and all the different noises used by Bright Moments in this song, "Travelers." There is a big African influence in the beats of the song. I bet their set at SXSW will be really fun and boisterous. I'm definitely going to check out the rest of the record, "Natives."

Today: Something New

Since SXSW starts tomorrow I figured I would talk about some artists that are going to playing there. The first is Daughter, who was featured on the All Song's Considered podcast. "Landfill" off her EP, "His Young Heart," sits so perfectly in the blend of sad and angry female singer-songwriter music.

I'm really enjoying the plethora or really great female singer-songwriters lately. The songs are usually so simple and the lyrics on "Landfill" are poignant and painful. Elena Tonra's voice is beautiful and haunting. I would love to see Daughter in live, but at a small venue for sure.

Today: Something Old

This is one of my favorite songs. I wish it was longer than two and a half minutes.

This is M. Ward at this best with his guitar and Zooey sounds great featured on the song. From the lead-in kick drum to the awesome harmonies and echoes of the chorus. "Never Had Nobody Like You" off "Hold Time" (2009) has the same old-school rock feel that was the magic of the first She & Him record.

Today: Something New

More female pop, but is that really a bad thing? I love the clapping keeping the beat under the chorus.

"Gimme a Kiss" from Madi Diaz, off her record, "Plastic Moon." The harmonies between the two singers are great, especially over the guitar line. And I love the choral "Ohhs" mixed with the chimes towards the end. The song builds to an incredibly full sound at the end of the song.

Today: Something New

"You, Me and the Boatman" from Quiet Company is another happy, big indie pop-rock song. There are many different parts of their sound.

I really like the parts of the song where the sound drops out behind the vocals and it's just basic guitar and drums and then the rest of the sound comes back in with full force. The slight echo on the vocals sometimes is pretty cool too.

Today: Something Told

I have always been a self-professed music lover and enjoy sharing music I like with my friends, which is the main reason I started this blog. Writing about music almost everyday has caused me to think more deeply about why I like certain types of music and why I dislike others.

I have always been partial to lyrics. I like songs I can sing along with. I like songs that tell stories and have interesting harmonies. Because I grew up singing but never excelled at playing instruments I think I connect with lyrics more than the instrumentation of a song.

I also think that music taste is largely environmental. There are many songs I like because of where I first heard them and who I was with. Listening to those songs again evoke the same feelings as when I originally like them.

Today: Something New

I think I like Chuck Prophet because his voice isn't that good. His harmonies on this song are awesome because he almost sing-speaks everything.

"Play That Song Again" is the lead-off song from "Temple Beautiful." And of course, his guitar is really good indie rock.

Today: Something New

Ok, so this music video is really strange. But this song is awesome. You could put this on while doing work or just to dance.

"Animal Love I" is the lead-off single for Charlene Kaye's new album. The sound is an awesome mix of dance-pop and electronic indie.

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Today: Something New

I will admit, this song is a little strange or unsettling. But I think it is beautiful. The harmonies are perfect over the extremely simple backing music.

"All Waters" from Perfume Genius is from last month's "Put Your Back N 2 It." The only thing I would change about the song would be to make it longer.

Today: Something Borrowed

I really love music from the 60s. In the same vein as the early Beatles, The Zombies were part of the British invasion and enjoyed success with a similar sound.

I really love this cover of "This Will Be our Year" by Memoryhouse. It retains the rock vibe of the original but also updates the sound with a beachy feel. It could totally be a new song. I love hearing the song with a female vocalist. She sounds so much like Zooey Deschanel!

Today: Something New

Good Old War's new album, "Come Back As Rain," comes out today. They have a folk/singer-songwriter vibe. I love the lead single, "Calling Me Names."

I love the harmonies and this is such an upbeat song, despite the title. Perfect for the beginning of spring. I can just imagine having this playing while driving on a sunny day with the windows down like in the video. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the record.

Today: Something New

Like I said yesterday, I'm a huge fan of Josh Ritter. I love his mellow sound and his literary lyrics. His new EP, "Bringing In Your Darlings," is just another example of his prolific talent.

"Love Is Making Its Way Back Home" is even a little more rock than some of this earlier material. It's a little more intricate than some of his songs, which rely heavily on guitar. I like how his sound is evolving.

Monday, March 5, 2012

Today: Something Old

I was reminded today of my love for Josh Ritter. He's not classic rock like I usually have in my "Something Old" post. I'm not recommending brand new music here but but come back tomorrow to check out his new EP, "Bringing In the Darlings." I've seen Josh twice in concert and he is amazing live. He has so much energy and his lyrics are incredibly descriptive and poetic.

One of Josh Ritter's coolest songs is "The Temptation of Adam" off his 2007 record, "The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter." It's not even my favorite of his, which would have to be the beautiful "Bone of Song" off "Hello Starling" (2003), but it is such a cool way to tell a really compelling story through song. I love songs that can surprise me. This video is great, too, because it shows what Josh does best. Simple, so as to not detract from his amazing music.

Today: Something New

I can't really figure out why I like this song so much. Off their new EP, "Those Of Us Still Alive," Tiny Victories has found a really strong sound in "Mr. Bones."

It's a little more electronic than I usually like but I'm definitely adding this to a playlist.

Today: Something New

I'm really looking forward to M. Ward's new album, "A Wasteland Companion," out in April. I really like the song "Primitive Girl" that I heard on All Songs Considered.

This is a positive sounding song. It is different from his previous stuff. I really like the melody here and the lyrics are cute.

Today: Something New

"Thread" is the title track from Now, Now's upcoming record. It's pretty basic pop-rock that is fun to listen to. I really like the female lead vocals and the harmonies on the chorus.

I'm intrigued to hear the rest of the album when it is released. I wonder if any of their other tracks will go somewhere else. There is potential there.

Thursday, March 1, 2012

Today: Something New

I really like "Bright Whites" because there is so much going on in the song. It's complicated but the main melody is easy to follow. I think I hear something different every time I listen to it. And I like that.

I really love the almost nonsensical lyrics at the beginning. The song is fun to sing and dance around to. I like that you can tell Kishi Bashi was having so much fun creating and recording this. My favorite part is around the three minute mark where the backing drops out and it is just the vocals for a bit.

Today: Something New

I'm a big Regina Spektor fan because she is an incredibly talented musician and story-teller. I especially like her because she sounds so different from most other music. The aspects of her voice and sound she chooses to focus on are so interesting. So I am very much looking forward to her new record, "What We Saw From the Cheap Seats."

Her lead single, "All the Rowboats" is so different from her usual sound. It is darker and more ominous that most of her previous records, especially her last venture. It's intricate and I think I will like the song more the more I hear it. I can't wait for the rest of the album.

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Today: Something Borrowed

A few weeks ago I talked about Gotye's album, "Making Mirrors," and his hit single "Somebody That I Used to Know." Not only do I love the song (and am still listening to it a bunch) I really dig this awesome cover from Walk Off the Earth.

This is such a cool video and cover. It has gotten a lot of hype. I am so impressed with their musicality and the fact that they can create this sound from five people playing on the same instrument.

Today: Something New

This is an awesome song from The Staves. "Mexico" off their recent EP.

The harmonies are brilliant and their voices are so pure and beautiful. The song is haunting and wonderful.

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Today: Something New

Album recommendation. "Go For It" from Rabbit! Somehow this record is both very simple and very intricate at the same time. It's happy and reminds me a bit of The Weepies or Tegan and Sara.

I love the electronic sounds combined with the really simple vocals of "When We Were Young." And I love the "Ahhs" on the chorus.

I love the harmonies on "Best Thing I Found." Many of their songs use "Ahhs" and "Ohhs" very effectively. The songs are just adorable.

Also, check out the whistling on "New Day Sunshine."

Today: Something New

More happy music. I love the piano and the chimes in this song.

"Pretty Eyes," a single from Dream Brother, is very summery. It is perfect for a snowy February day. Dream of being at the beach and listening to this song. I love the clapping and the energy.

Monday, February 27, 2012

Today: Something New

"Can We Really Party Today?" from Jonathan Wilson is very mellow. His sound is very folk/country. I especially like the different rhythms between the verses and the chorus.

This live version is faster than the version on the record but the different tempos are even more exaggerated. I like it. You can check out this song on his record, "Gentle Spirit."

Today: Something Old

The reason I like Van Morrison so much is because he uses his voice like an instrument. It's one more sound that he uses to create the overall sound of the song. It almost has the same effect as a trumpet or other brass in songs.

My favorite Van Morrison song is "Tupelo Honey" off his record of the same name. The record was released in 1971, but this song feels like it comes from another time. It's a beautiful blend of southern rock and old storytelling. The best line is, "Men with insight, men in granite. Knights in armor bent on chivalry."

Friday, February 24, 2012

Today: Something New

"Runaway" from Imperial Teen is a fun song. It is a dance around the room song. It has a simple, repetitive beat and melody but it is such a fun sound.

Their record is aptly named "Feel the Sound" because when you listen, you definitely feel the sound they are trying to embody.

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Today: Something New

This is an addendum to my post last Friday about fun.'s new album, "Some Nights." I want to reiterate how great this wholealbum is. I think you should check out the record from the beginning to end. I get flavors of Queen and Panic At the Disco with their drama and showmanship. I hope I get to see them in concert while they tour this record. So I'm going to share a couple more songs off the album.

The title track, "Some Nights," is a rousing, boisterous party of a song. It wavers between a loud African-beat inspired chorus and the singular auto-tuned voice of front-man, Nate Ruess. I'm not usually a fan of auto-tune but fun. seems to be utilizing the specific sound for a specific purpose here. I could sing along with the "ohs" all day long.

Where "Some Nights" had an African feel, "Carry On" has some Irish influence. The strings combined with the accordion is amazing. Another loud, boisterous song but so different from their other ventures.

This album has solidified me as a fun. fan.

Today: Something New

I am definitely a fan of rock bands with female singers. I think that is why I am really enjoying the latest record from the Heartless Bastards, "Arrow." They are true rock and Erika Wennerstrom's unexpected vocals bring something very interesting to their sound.

I really like the guitar on "Parted Ways." It matches so well with Wennerstrom's alto and the whole tone of the song.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Today: Something New

I love, love, love the guitar in this song. The vocal melody lays simply over plucky guitar and the result is great. Check out Everyman Of Parts.

Each verses drive towards the refrain of "Arid Eyes."

Today: Something Borrowed

This is a really interesting cover of the Phoenix song, "1901." Birdy has a record coming out soon and the way her voice floats over the slowed down melody shows how good it will probably be. Taking the rock song and simplifying it highlights the lyrics and the feeling behind them.

I'm so impressed for someone so young.

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Today: Something New

It might just be my affinity for any band that has "whale" in their name (see Freelance Whales and Noah & The Whale), but I've been enjoying Said the Whale's EP, "New Brighton." Especially the title single. It's pure indie rock.

I especially love the clapping parts, makes me want to join in.

Today: Something New

Islands came out with a new record a couple weeks ago and I'm really digging their song, "Hallways." It has an old-school vibe and I really love the piano and the horns at the end of the song. The vocals are good and the song is a great addition to an indie playlist.

Check out the album as a whole, "A Sleep & a Forgetting."

Monday, February 20, 2012

Today: Something Old

If you are a Bones fan, you will know this song. I love it. It's pure 70s country rock. Amazing harmonies layered over simple guitar give the song a full sound with very little effort. It just sounds easy. Poco isn't as well known as Jim Messina's other ventures, Buffalo Springfield or his duo with Kenny Loggins, but they still perform today and have some great songs, my favorite being "Keep On Trying."

Today: Something New

This song is kind of dark and a little scary. But for all its lyrical dark matter, it's surprising upbeat in sound. The lyrics are interesting and there are a lot of great harmonies. "Burn Burn Burn" from Burning Hearts is a pretty song so check it out.

Friday, February 17, 2012

Today: Something New

fun. has gained some notoriety recently with their lead-off hit single "We Are Young" but I'm very excited for their new record out next week. Whereas "We Are Young" is an anthem of sorts, "One Foot" is a funkier mix of hip hop and dance beats.

I love all the different parts of "We Are Young." The contrast between the first verse of just simple vocals, drums, and piano and the powerful, sound-filled chorus is so interesting and wonderful.

There is no doubt that the infectious beats and crazy lyrics make fun.'s songs fun.

Today: Something New

My favorite thing about this song is that it is weird. The sound is quirky and the lyrics are strange. But it's great and it's fun. And if you watch the video, it's not all that surprising. King Charles is quite eccentric with "Bam Bam."

His voice isn't technically great but the overall sound definitely keeps my interest.

Thursday, February 16, 2012

Today: Something New

I loved the first record from Tennis last year, so I'm so excited for their new record, "Young & Old," which came out on Tuesday. I really like "Petition" off the new record

It sounds so different from their first record but the vocals are so awesome. They are super clear and the melody is catchy. It's great as part of the overall record. Give it a listen!

Today: Something New

Andrew Bird has a really distinctive sound. He's an indie music festival and playlist staple. I love all his clever plays on the lyrics in "Eyeoneye" off his upcoming record. The song builds to a very energetic end and then finishes with a whisper.

I just love the whistling.

Today: Something Borrowed

The original "Tubthumping" was popular, if that's what it was, when I was in 5th grade. I thought it was a catchy, weird song when I was 10 and I think it is a catchy weird song now. This video shows how the cover even came into existence:

I'm glad that They Might Be Giants chose this to cover and highlighted the odd parts of the song. I think they made the song even better. Chumbawamba was just asking to be auto-tuned. And I just love all the people playing and singing in that small room. The crazy energy definitely comes across in the recording.

Today: Something New

I love that this song by Kithkin is called "Ampersand." I love the juxtaposition of the two voices trading lines in this song. And the different sounds of the verses and the chorus. Many instruments, many noises, especially the drums and the clapping.

This is a great song to dance around you room to.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Today: Something New

Eins, Zwei Orchestra is a pop/indie rock duo with a new EP featuring mostly acoustic covers of songs from their 2011 record, "100 Colors."

My favorite off the EP is new title song, "Peace and Love," which is perfect for today. The song is not so much about romantic love but love for life and music. I love the piano and their voices together. So simple and beautiful. "So can't we just agree upon a deal, a trade, or so."

Today: Something New

If Valentine's Day was in the summer, this would be a perfect anthem. In snowy February, this happy, beachy song is just what we need.

"I Will Love You" by Summer Twins has a happy simple guitar riff paired with sunny, bright vocals and a real 60s vibe. Enjoy.

Monday, February 13, 2012

Today: Something New

This song reminds me a little of one of my favorite artists, Josh Ritter. "Chimes" by The Pines has great guitar and a rough voice is very much like Josh Ritter's.

You can tell their record, "Dark So Gold," has been heavily influenced by the midwest indie rock scene and greats like Bob Dylan. I'll definitely be checking out more from them.

Today: Something Old

In honor of Valentine's Day this week, here is a classic love song. You know you have a good song when it's covered many times over. I can't decide if I love the original Elvis version or Ingrid Michaelson's more.

Elvis has such a rich voice but Ingrid is such a song-smith and takes the original melody and makes it something else.

Today: Something Told

Last weekend Madonna performed the half-time show of the Super Bowl with special guests: LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, MIA, and Cee-lo Green. By far, it is the most widely watched television program in the United States. Madonna has entered her fourth decade of pop culture dominance. At 53, she still "strike[s] a pose" and is releasing a new album. She opened with "Vogue" and closed with my personal favorite, "Like a Prayer," as well as performing her new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin'" which has already made it into the top 10 on itunes.

My question is, does Madonna still have the music magic that first made her a star? Is the music she is releasing today as good as her music when she first emerged on the scene? To me, "Give Me All Your Luvin'" feels recycled and, frankly, boring. But I'm sure it will still be played to death on the radio and her new record will sell millions of copies. Why? Is the music good or do certain media icons carry so much pop culture clout that we are no longer consuming the products they produce, just their image. Do we buy and listen to Madonna's new songs because they are actually good? Or do we buy and listen to Madonna's new songs because they are "Madonna?"

The "hipster" anti-trend of the past few years, that is in fact a trend itself, emphasizes culture as anti-culture; music being a large part of that expression. The idea of relating to music because it is NOT mainstream; because you feel like you choose it for yourself instead of the media shoving it down your throat. These hipster bands have cult followings instead of broader success, but does that mean their music is good?

Where does the value of music come into play? Commercial value leans towards wide-ranging notoriety and records sales. Ethical value (not selling out) leans towards the artist creating music they are proud of. Considering the wide variety of personal music taste, it's hard to make a judgement on whether one type of music has more value than another.

What I have come up with is a two-fold argument: Just because social media has made it incredibly easy to put music out there, in various forms, doesn't mean that everyone with a guitar and a recording device should form a band. If you value indie band success, put out music that you will be proud of, that your loyal fans will be proud of when they are sharing with their friends who've never heard of you.

On the other hand, if you achieve worldwide fame and success with your music, take great pains to release music that you are proud of as well. Don't rely on your reputation as an artist to sell your records. Sell music that is new, is fresh, and has meaning.

Today: Something New

Porcelain Raft release their first LP a couple of weeks ago, "Strange Weekend." They are an alternative band with an electronic edge.

I'm not usually a fan of heavily electronic sounding music, but I really like "Drifting In and Out." Apt to the name of the song, it gives you the feeling that you are floating with the song. It's a good song to put on in the background and relax. I love the female vocals drifting over the top.

Thursday, February 9, 2012

Today: Something New

Another album recommendation: "Thao & Mirah" from Mirah & Thao. I've been a long-time fan of Thao + The Get Down Stay Down so I was super excited for her collaboration with Mirah. This record is a little more folky and a lot more funky than stuff with her band, but I like it.

I love this live version of "How Dare You" on KEXP. It shows off the strength of their voices.

My other favorite on the record is "Hallelujah."

The song is haunting and beautiful. I love the simple guitar and how it matches Mirah's voice perfectly. I especially love the harmonies Thao provides.

Today: Something New

I've been a Ben Kweller fan since he collaborated with Guster in 2003. He just released a new record, "Go Fly A Kite." Not only do I love the Mary Poppins reference, but I really like that he continues to be true to his rock vibe and happy melodies.

Although the record is brand new, Ben Kweller has been playing "Jealous Girl" live for a couple years now. The lyrics are pretty simple but that does not take away from the quality of the song, especially live with just his piano accompaniment.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Today: Something Borrowed

Sometimes songs shouldn't be borrowed. Skylar Grey released a compilation of demos, including the original version of "Love the Way You Lie." I could really take or leave the Eminem/Rihanna version even though it was played everywhere. Grey's original version is beautiful however, and I really wish that she had been the one to release it, or at least sing on Eminem's track.

Granted, the chorus works more than the verses, so it is understandable that it was chosen for the hook behind the rap. She's a great songwriter, so I hope she released some of her songs on her own.

Today: Something New

This song is a walking cliche. But in a good way. No, seriously, the lyrics are all idioms. Clever, Dr. Dog, I see what you did there.

"That Old Black Hole" is very catchy and kind of rock and roll. I especially love the bridge around the 2:15 mark.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Today: Something New

"Dreaming About the Sea" by The Sea and City almost seems like two different songs. It starts off acoustically and simply and then builds into a much more massive sound. It really picks up when the rest of the band comes in. And I like it. I'm definitely a sucker for a mandolin.

I really like the contemplative lyrics. This is a good song to put on your "while I'm working" playlist and enjoy."

Check out the band playing the song in a cathedral (for awesome acoustics) and his guitar is super cool as well!

Monday, February 6, 2012

Today: Something New

I love female singers with folksy, interesting voices and a new favorite is Cate Le Bon with her new record, "Cyrk."

"Ploughing Out, Pt. 1" is a simple melody that showcases Le Bon's voice as she jumps from low to high notes and back again. Her voice is accompanied by folk rock instruments with a twangy twist.

And since this song can't be found on youtube (though I still recommend trying to find it) check out "Fold the Cloth," which also incorporates her folk rock sound with her unique voice.

Today: Something Old

I love classic rock. Maybe one of the best songs ever is "The Weight" by The Band. This song is just the epitome of cool. If this song was a person it would be the guy who is not trying to be cool. It doesn't even care what you think about; it's just effortlessly cool. "He just grinned and shook my hand, 'No,' was all he said."

The mixture of religion-inspired lyrics and folk-country feel make this song feel old and nostalgic and classic and timeless at the same time. It makes me wish I was around to see them play live at Woodstock or their Last Waltz concert.

Friday, February 3, 2012

Today: Something New

I've heard this song a lot of different places lately. It's great. I love the way she uses her voice as the background, acapella style. Boom-she-clack-clack. I always love singers who treat their voices as real instruments. "Concrete Wall" off Zee Avi's new record, "Ghostbird," is awesomely funky.

Please enjoy.

Today: Something New

The lyrics of "Ali Baba" by Emil & Friends are strange but catchy. But, then again, so is the band. I really love the guitar on this track as well.

To start the melody bounces above the guitar riffs and makes this song great to listen to or sing along to. Then the electric guitar and the violin come in and add depth. By the end of the song, you end up with a beautiful song.

Thursday, February 2, 2012

Today: Something New

Howler's first full-length record, "America Give Up," has an old school indie rock vibe with lots of variation.

The single, "Back of Your Neck" showcases the band's mellower side as well as their interesting vocal sound. It is understated without being sleepy. This is one I wish I could see live.

Today: Something New

M. Ward is the male half of one of my favorite duos, She & Him. He has some great solo stuff as well. Yesterday he released a new song from his upcoming record.

"The First Time I Ran Away" combines his always amazing guitar with great percussion that drives the song. His vocals just kind of float over the track. Great chill out music. I can't wait for the whole album.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Today: Something New

This song is almost a year old, but I think it's fun and a funny story told from an interesting perspective.

Maria In the Shower has a really interesting sound. "The Bee Song (The Plight of the Bumblebee)" has an old school story-teller vibe. I love the buzzing onomatopoeia.

Today: Something Borrowed

I loved the record, "Cape Dory," from Tennis last winter. Such a fun, 1960s beach vibe. Which makes them perfect to cover "Tell Her No" by The Zombies.

The simple arrangement fits great with Alaina's voice and the harmonies are great. I love when she breaks into the chorus of "No, no, no, no, no."

I seriously cannot wait for their new record, out in a few weeks.

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Today: Something New

I love when songs tell unexpected stories. When songs look at something from a different perspective. Check out this acoustic version of Dear Reader's song, "Mole (Mole)"

Her song, about a mole of all things, is so clever while being super simple and beautiful. The entire record, "Idealistic Animals," is, as you would expect, full of animal themed songs. Quirky and fun.

Today: Something New

Caracol is a talented French-Canadian pop singer. Her record, "Blanc Mercredi," was released in the fall and I really like her single, "All the Girls."

I love the guitars in the intro and the harmonies on the alternating lines of the verses. Once again, I'm recommending a song with really sad lyrics but that is somehow upbeat.

Monday, January 30, 2012

Today: Something New

"Lost Communication" starts off with a very electronic sound but as the song builds, all the background sounds blend really well with the driving piano and rough vocals.

I hope to hear more soon from Anothers Blood.

Today: Something Old

My taste in classic rock music comes from my dad. I have a somewhat unexpected love of Creedence Clearwater Revival. They were so prodigious in just a few short years. Their songs are so simple but so great. My favorite, "Down On the Corner," has a very basic verse and chorus pattern that is just repeated through the song.

John Fogarty's music is such a great example of the time period and makes me want to play a washboard or a harmonica. Ok, not really, but you understand.

Friday, January 27, 2012

Today: Something New

Another band that caught my ear this month is The Cosmic Eye. From the drums on the intro the happy, summery vocals, I feel like I should blast this at a beach party or on a summer drive. I know, I know, perfect for January. But hey, we all need a little more sunshine at this time of year.

I especially like the back and forth of the vocals between the male and female singers on "Shimmy Shimmy Breakdown." They end a lot of their phrases with very dissonant notes, creating some interesting harmonies. They have not yet released an official record, but keep an eye out!

Today: Something Told

Sometimes, I will also use this space to express some thoughts and opinions on music related things, not just give glowing reviews and recommendations.

Today, I'm going to talk about musicals, so if that's not your cup of tea, feel free to skip this. But, who knows, maybe you'll learn something new!

When they first announced that they were going to make the stage-production, Les Miserable, into a movie I was thrilled. I have seen the musical three times, sung "I Dreamed a Dream" and "On My Own" for voice lessons when I was younger, and the entire soundtrack is the most played of my Broadway playlist on itunes. Obviously, I'm a fan and I was ecstatic that soon I would have the opportunity to watch the musical whenever I wished.

At the same time, I had some major concerns. First, how were they going to turn the stage-production into a movie? The Les Miserable stage is famous for its circling floor that drives the action and the set, even leading to the creation of an original choreography step, the Les Mis side-step (including marching arm motions). The revolving stage and slums to barricade set pieces add to the breathtaking imagery that is the backdrop to the Revolution and the play itself. Obviously, the pieces that are involved in stage magic do not translate to movie magic and, for the film, a much more literal backdrop will be involved.

Secondly, Les Mis has no spoken dialogue. The story is told entirely through the music and the action seen on stage. Even taking into consideration "The Artist"'s recent Golden Globe wins, I don't think pop culture is ready for an entire film told through song. Will dialogue be added? Will that take away from the importance and necessity of some of the songs? What about the orchestral parts that do not even have singing? I wonder how disruptive inserting dialogue into the production will be for the overall feeling of the score.

Third, and probably most importantly, who will they cast? When musicals were in their heyday, producers predominantly cast people who could sing and dance and also act. True triple threats: Julie Andrews and Bing Crosby; Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. When actors were hired and couldn't sing, someone else did the singing: Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, Debbie Reynolds in Singin' In the Rain. Now, ever celebrity thinks they can sing and thanks to auto-tune and sound mixing technologies, they can produce a record without having to hit every note.

Almost immediately, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe were attached as escaped convict, Jean Valjean, and Detective Javert, respectively. I have no problem with Jackman doing musicals given his stage credentials. I'm slightly less thrilled with Crowe, though he does have a background in music, if not musicals. Adding even more star power was Anne Hathaway cast as Fantine. She will draw fans but I'm not sure her singing chops are up to belting out "I Dreamed a Dream" like the role calls for. But she has enough talent that I made peace with it.

After a few months of speculation, Amanda Seyfried was announced as Cosette. Now as a life-long alto, I have an unfounded hatred for the soprano character of Cosette, who although as a child in the production has the well known number "Castle On a Cloud," as an adult she does little more than bop around the stage and annoyingly steal the guy away from poor Eponine. Seyfried has prior movie-musical in "Mamma Mia" but I was not blown away by what I heard and singing ABBA pop is a lot different than the serious stuff of Les Mis.

What I'm really dreading is the rumor that country-pop sensation, Taylor Swift, is up for the coveted role of Eponine. As the poor neighbor girl, hopelessly in love with Marius, Eponine is the heart of the play, capturing the audience with "On My Own" sung below by Lea Salonga, and breaking their hearts with "A Little Fall of Rain."

Now, I'm slightly biased as Eponine would be a dream role if I were actually capable of singing on Broadway, but I just don't see how Miss Swift can do the role justice. I think she is an incredibly talented songwriter with a voice that works for her country sound, but she has already proven that when she sings live, it leaves something to be desired. When the director announced that he wanted the actors to sing live on the sound stage, I grew even more concerned.

I guess all I can do is cross my fingers and hope that they don't destroy my favorite musical of all time.

Today: Something New

Alright, another record rec. I've been loving on "Never Trust a Happy Song" by Grouplove for the past few months. This is more happy music with driving pop beats and catchy hooks. Singer, Christian Zucconi, has a great voice for the indie rock sound, rough but pleasant.

In true hipster spirit, I'm recommending two songs that are not listed on the "Top Songs on iTunes" from the record.

"Cruel and Beautiful World" is a little more melancholy that the rest of the record but I love the guitar/banjo combo with Zucconi's voice, especially the harmonies and when he opens up on the chorus.

My other recommendation is "Love Will Save Your Soul." This song has a lot more energy than "Cruel and Beautiful World," but the harmonies remain precise and beautiful. And I'm a sucker for echoing, so the verses of this song are fun.

Today: Something New

Most of what I post on here will not be all that mainstream. Sometimes though, I like a good pop song. For all of her flaws, Katy Perry can definitely produce catchy music. Her second record, "Teenage Dream," has been on top of the charts for the last year and a half. This doesn't always mean that it is good music, but I really enjoy the acoustic version of her latest single, "The One That Got Away."

Stripping away the pop arrangement and focusing on her voice and an acoustic guitar makes the lyrics and song more poignant than her original pop sound. I really like the different choices she makes for the melody, especially around the 3:30 mark.

Today: Something Borrowed

Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" was everywhere in 2011. A catchy melody with a different sound made for an infectious song that became very popular. Owl Eyes has released a cover of the song, with Brooke Addamo putting a female spin on it.

I really like Addamo's voice and the simplicity of the somewhat stripped down version. It's not quite different enough to be mind-blowing and there is something a little lacking without the layering of voices during the choruses from the original, but I really like where she is going with the song.

And of course whistling always adds a little something.

Today: Something New

Poetic lyrics. Interesting harmonies. Quirky voices. Makes for a great sound. Swedish sister act, First Aid Kit, has graced us with their sophomore record, "The Lion's Roar." I love their folksy sound and the twang they have in their voices without being too country.

The bonus track, "Wolf," has a haunting melody with a driving beat. The chorus gets stuck in your head in the best of ways with its clever lyrics.

Today: Something Borrowed

If mimicry is the highest form of flattery, covering a song is the musical equivalent. Not all songs should be covered, but there is something interesting and satisfying about hearing a new take on a song you love.

This is one of my favorite songs by an amazing songwriter:

"Lioness: Hidden Treasures" is a record of many covers by Amy Winehouse, posthumously released back in December. In the 2011 version of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" Amy uses her unique voice to infuse this classic standard with vulnerability and strength: roughness and purity.

Today: Something New

Ingrid Michaelson released a new record today. "Human Again" is full of her usual sound. I'm really enjoying the song "Do It Now" off the record.

Here is a live version from a recent show:

This song showcases Ingrid's unique voice and the melody is very catchy. The music is more intricate than some of her earlier recordings. I really like how she keeps evolving as an artist.

Today: Something New

Usually I recommend songs, but today I'm recommending a record. I listened to Gotye's new record, "Making Mirrors," after a friend reminded me how much I like his hit single, "Somebody That I Used to Know," featuring Kimbra.

This single is infectious and gets better the more you listen to it. Wally De Backer plays with an awesome blend of simple melodies backed by interesting instrumentation, many times influenced by his Australian sound.

I also like the first single, "Eyes Wide Open," and the fun, "In Your Light," which is more upbeat and raucous compared to the rest of the album.

I definitely recommend giving this entire record a full listen to, from beginning to end.

Today: Something Old

The thing about a good song is that you can listen to it over and over again. Great songs last years and years. A really great song takes you back to the place you were when you first connected with it. An incredible song is a visceral memory. Here I will be posting some of my favorite songs, classics and unknowns alike.

First up is a song off one of my all time favorite records:

Elvis Costello is a genius and "My Aim Is True" is a record that I can listen to from beginning to end on repeat. Of course "Alison" and "(The Angels Want To Wear) My Red Shoes" are well-known singles off the record. However, I think my favorite song is "Less Than Zero" because of his quirky lyrics. Specifically, "Well I hear that South America is coming into style." When I was in high school studying Latin American history and politics I would listen to this record and think about the discrepancies between the image South America had in the 1960s and 70s and the reality. It was in style to vacation or escape there, oblivious to the conditions most of the region was living under.

Today: Something New

I love happy music. Sometimes I love quiet, contemplative, dark music. Sometimes I love loud, intense, rock music. But my favorite is happy music. Music that makes you smile while you sing along.

Today that song is:

Team Me is a relatively well established Norwegian indie band that released "With My Hands Covering Both of My Eyes I Am Too Scared to Have a Look at You Now" back in December in anticipation of their new EP coming out in March. I hope their EP "To the Treetops!" is as boisterous and upbeat as this lead-off single.

I especially love the string and "Ahhhs" section at the 4:00 minute mark. Though the wordy title and lyrics aren't the happiest, I can't listen to this song without smiling.

I Listen. I Sing. I Write.

Following the suggestion of a very wise friend, I've decided to begin posting various thoughts of my greatest passion: music.

I listen to A LOT of music. Daily, if not constantly. I more often than not wake up with a song stuck in my head and annoy everyone around singing under my breath.

I like very eclectic music, though I lean towards an indie rock and singer/songwriter sound. Most of what I post here will be in that vein with some random surprises thrown in.

Another thing you should know about me is that I'm kind of a dork. I like lots of silly and random things, so I hope you can find some things you like on here.
