This song is a great indie find from about three and a half years ago. They haven't really done much since, but I love this song.
Towards the end of their record, "Broadcast," Meese has a wonderful piano driven ballad with "Movie Screens." The vocals of Patrick Meese are very similar to The Fray or OneRepublic. I dare you to not get the chorus stuck in your head.

Today: Something Old
The Rolling Stones are one of my all-time favorite bands. And "Paint It Black" is my favorite song of theirs.
A 1966 release off "Aftermath," it is such a weird song, but pure rock and roll. I absolutely love the sitar guitar rift and the interesting drum beat. And of course, Mick Jagger is just such a badass. Wonderful.

I'm not really the biggest Bob Dylan fan. I think he's an amazing song-writer, but I don't have the same affinity towards him like I do many of his generation. That being said, I really love this song.
I couldn't find a video of the original version "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," so if you haven't heard it, PLEASE try to listen to that. Instead here is a recent live version that is very different, but it has an added bonus of Eric Clapton. Two amazing guitarists for the price of one! The reason I love the original is how simple and contemplative it is. This video lacks that, but if you listen to the lyrics you may be able to tell what I mean.

Even though this Old Crow Medicine Show song came out in 2004, it will always remind me of college. While most of the student body prided itself on NOT being southern, pretty much everybody was able to sing along any time "Wagon Wheel" was played.
Maybe it's that hipsters like to think of themselves as ironically trashy or that the strings and harmonies are exceptional. It's really just a good song.

This is one of my favorite songs. I wish it was longer than two and a half minutes.
This is M. Ward at this best with his guitar and Zooey sounds great featured on the song. From the lead-in kick drum to the awesome harmonies and echoes of the chorus. "Never Had Nobody Like You" off "Hold Time" (2009) has the same old-school rock feel that was the magic of the first She & Him record.

I was reminded today of my love for Josh Ritter. He's not classic rock like I usually have in my "Something Old" post. I'm not recommending brand new music here but but come back tomorrow to check out his new EP, "Bringing In the Darlings." I've seen Josh twice in concert and he is amazing live. He has so much energy and his lyrics are incredibly descriptive and poetic.
One of Josh Ritter's coolest songs is "The Temptation of Adam" off his 2007 record, "The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter." It's not even my favorite of his, which would have to be the beautiful "Bone of Song" off "Hello Starling" (2003), but it is such a cool way to tell a really compelling story through song. I love songs that can surprise me. This video is great, too, because it shows what Josh does best. Simple, so as to not detract from his amazing music.

The reason I like Van Morrison so much is because he uses his voice like an instrument. It's one more sound that he uses to create the overall sound of the song. It almost has the same effect as a trumpet or other brass in songs.
My favorite Van Morrison song is "Tupelo Honey" off his record of the same name. The record was released in 1971, but this song feels like it comes from another time. It's a beautiful blend of southern rock and old storytelling. The best line is, "Men with insight, men in granite. Knights in armor bent on chivalry."

If you are a Bones fan, you will know this song. I love it. It's pure 70s country rock. Amazing harmonies layered over simple guitar give the song a full sound with very little effort. It just sounds easy. Poco isn't as well known as Jim Messina's other ventures, Buffalo Springfield or his duo with Kenny Loggins, but they still perform today and have some great songs, my favorite being "Keep On Trying."

I love classic rock. Maybe one of the best songs ever is "The Weight" by The Band. This song is just the epitome of cool. If this song was a person it would be the guy who is not trying to be cool. It doesn't even care what you think about; it's just effortlessly cool. "He just grinned and shook my hand, 'No,' was all he said."
The mixture of religion-inspired lyrics and folk-country feel make this song feel old and nostalgic and classic and timeless at the same time. It makes me wish I was around to see them play live at Woodstock or their Last Waltz concert.

My taste in classic rock music comes from my dad. I have a somewhat unexpected love of Creedence Clearwater Revival. They were so prodigious in just a few short years. Their songs are so simple but so great. My favorite, "Down On the Corner," has a very basic verse and chorus pattern that is just repeated through the song.
John Fogarty's music is such a great example of the time period and makes me want to play a washboard or a harmonica. Ok, not really, but you understand.

Today: Something Old
The thing about a good song is that you can listen to it over and over again. Great songs last years and years. A really great song takes you back to the place you were when you first connected with it. An incredible song is a visceral memory. Here I will be posting some of my favorite songs, classics and unknowns alike.
First up is a song off one of my all time favorite records:
Elvis Costello is a genius and "My Aim Is True" is a record that I can listen to from beginning to end on repeat. Of course "Alison" and "(The Angels Want To Wear) My Red Shoes" are well-known singles off the record. However, I think my favorite song is "Less Than Zero" because of his quirky lyrics. Specifically, "Well I hear that South America is coming into style." When I was in high school studying Latin American history and politics I would listen to this record and think about the discrepancies between the image South America had in the 1960s and 70s and the reality. It was in style to vacation or escape there, oblivious to the conditions most of the region was living under.
